An African savanna elephant leaving a water hole investigated and trashed our camera's motion sensor situated behind a log. Notice the relaxed nature of this elephant as it inspects the strange smell of this new feature on its path, finds the sensor with its trunk, then flings it to the side with minimal effort.

Sometimes elephants ignore equipment, as this one did with the camera, sometimes they avoid it, and sometimes they destroy it. They might even test some objects, in this case the battery, to see if they might be food.

Cameras and related equipment of course do not stand a chance in the face of an elephant's trunk. With its 40,000 muscles, it can pick up a 600-pound log or a small berry from the ground equally well.

Elephants' tremendous sense of smell helps them negotiate their environment, including detecting changes to familiar pathways such as this one.
